Etymology:

andreettae = Angel Andreetta (1920 - 2011), Italian clergyman, came to Ecuador as a missionary in 1939 and to many parts of the country during the missionary work that lasted more than 30 years, collected numerous orchids with Carlyle August Luer, among others. Besides numerous species, the genus Andreettaea Luer was founded in his honour in 1978 (Orchidaceae). He also laid the foundation for numerous nurseries in Ecuador, including Ecuagenera.

Habitat:

epiphytic on wet, mossy trees at elevations from 2000 to 2500m in the Pacific Andes.

Notes:

The type originates from the first collection by Padre Angel Andretta & A. Hirtz, and first flowered in Cuenca. Luer found Dracula andreettae again on July 12, 1977 in Carcha, Ecuador, and described it first as Masdevallia andreettae. A short time later, he transferred it to the genus Dracula, which he founded.
Dracula andreettae can produce 20-25cm long pendulous inflorescence stems with up to 2 flowers per stem, flower size is highly variable at 12 -20cm
