The genus Restrepia is closely related to the genus Pleurothallis, but differs from it by the single-flowered stem, the fused lateral sepals and a thickened tip on the middle sepal. It owes its name to José E. RESTREPO, one of the first explorers of the Antiguan Andes in Colombia. The genus was founded in 1815 by HUMBOLDT, BONPLAND and KUNTH. Depending on the classification, 40-50 species belong to the genus, which occur from Mexico to northern Argentina. Mostly they grow in cooler places in the mountain forests of the Andes. They are often found as epiphytes, rarely as lithophytes.
Restrepia can be cultivated similarly to Pleurothallis. They like a semi-shady, cool to temperate spot, but it must not get colder than 14°C in winter. The plant should never be left dry for long periods. Make sure that air can circulate well around your Restrepia. A well-cultivated Restrepia can flower several times a year for several weeks.
