Etymology:

jenischiana = Martin Johann Jenisch (*12. April 1793 in Hamburg; †7. März 1857 in Vevey/Schweiz) was a merchant, orchid and flower lover, and an influential senator in Hamburg.

Habitat:

epiphyte in the western slopes of the Andes in montane areas with a distinct dry season at elevations of 800 to 1500 meters or occasional terrestrial on steep shaded roadbanks

Notes:

Stanhopeas produce pendulous panicles, and therefore must be cultivated in grud pots or wooden baskets, if flower Inflorescences occur in hanging pots they occasionally grow out the top, but also often get stuck.
Flowers are strongly sweet-scented, and can last about 1 week. Site changes during flowering period very often result in loss of  flowers.
Stanhopea jenischiana needs a significant winter break with little temperature reduction, but drought for several weeks. In nature, the plant receives only the dew at dusk and dawn.
