Etymology:

Józef Warszewicz Ritter von Rawicz

warscewiczii = Józef Warszewicz Ritter von Rawicz (* 8 September 1812 in Vilnius; † 29 December 1866 in Krakow) was a Polish, Russian botanist, plant and animal collector and explorer.

Propagation: seed
Origin: Colombia
Habitat:

Cattleya warscewiczii grows epiphytically at altitudes of 500 to 1700 metres in bright to almost full sun on trees near creeks or streams.

Notes:

Cattleya warscewiczii is one of the largest-flowered and most striking species among the unifoliate Cattleya. It was found in Colombia in 1848 by Józef Warszewicz Ritter von Rawicz and described from herbarium specimens. The mistake in the spelling of the name (warscewiczii instead of warszewiczii) has not been corrected, so that the species name is spelt warsce... or warsze... depending on the genus (i.e. Philodendron warszewiczii), depending on the genus.
In 1870 Jules Linden's nursery in Belgium received living plants from another Colombian province, which he cultivated and sold as Cattleya gigas (because of the large flower). Although it was recognised a short time later that Cattleya gigas was a synonym of Cattleya warscewiczii, the shorter name remained in the trade for many years, partly because of the simpler spelling.
Cattleya warscewiczii var. coerulea has not yet been botanically correctly described, but for many years it was traded as Cattleya gigas var. sanderiana.
