Etymology: |
warscewiczii = Józef Warszewicz Ritter von Rawicz (* 8 September 1812 in Vilnius; † 29 December 1866 in Krakow) was a Polish, Russian botanist, plant and animal collector and explorer. |
Propagation: | seed |
Origin: | Colombia |
Habitat: | Cattleya warscewiczii grows epiphytically at altitudes of 500 to 1700 metres in bright to almost full sun on trees near creeks or streams. |
Notes: | Cattleya warscewiczii is one of the largest-flowered and most striking species among the unifoliate Cattleya. It was found in Colombia in 1848 by Józef Warszewicz Ritter von Rawicz and described from herbarium specimens. The mistake in the spelling of the name (warscewiczii instead of warszewiczii) has not been corrected, so that the species name is spelt warsce... or warsze... depending on the genus (i.e. Philodendron warszewiczii), depending on the genus. |
