Habitat: | epiphytic, but also terrestrial on stony rocky slopes at altitudes from sea level to 800m in warm humid rainforest climates. Most collections have occurred on the Atlantic coast and in the Amazon basin, but herbarium material is also available from the eastern Andes of Peru. |
Notes: | Philodendron sphalerum was originally found in Suriname by the Dutch botanist Friedrich Ludwig Splitgerber (1801-1845). Spltigerber traveled the coastal areas of both Surinam and northern Brazil, his registered 1200 herbarium specimens, some of which he received from other collectors, were further processed and cataloged by de Vriese due to his early demise. The descriptions then took place to.m part only many years later. |
