Notes: | Xanthosoma sagittitiolium is cultivated as food under the name Tannia in the tropics of America, Africa and Asia. The tubers contain up to 25 % starch and protein. They are rich in provitamin A, and also contain vitamin C and traces of fat. Like many species of the arum family, Tannia contains calcium oxalate, a substance that irritates the mucous membranes, in all parts of the plant. It is therefore essential to boil the plant parts before eating them. |
