Etymology:

smithii = John Donnell Smith (b. June 5, 1829; † December 2, 1928) was an American plant collector and botanist.

Origin: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua
Habitat:

Mostly hemiepiphytic, sometimes terrestrial or lithophytic, climbing in wet tropical forests and in wet subtropical forests.

Notes:

The plant was found by J. Donnell Smith in the province of Yzabal on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala. Sea level was given as the altitude. Donnell-Smith described the plant, it can be assumed that Martius should publish the description, but finally the valid naming is done by Engler.
