Etymology:

andreettae = Angel Andreetta (1920 - 2011), Italian clergyman, came to Ecuador as a missionary in 1939 and to many parts of the country during the missionary work that lasted more than 30 years, he collected numerous orchids with Carlyle Luer, among others. Besides numerous species, the genus Andreettaea Luer was founded in his honour in 1978 (Orchidaceae). He also laid the foundation for numerous nurseries in Ecuador, including Ecuagenera.

Notes:

Phragmipedium andreettae is possibly the smallest of all Phragmipedium with 5cm wide flowers. It grows together with Phragmipedium schlimii and Phragmipedium fischeri, natural hybrids are assumed. The habitats are very bright but without direct sun, the temperature is 15-20°C at night, and 20-30°C during daytime. Phragmipedium andreettae is very often found near rivers and streams, where it grows directly on damp cliffs or among grasses and mosses.
