Product information "Alocasia portei 'Jacklyn'"
Name: Alocasia portei, Schott 1862 'Jacklyn'
Synonyms:

Schizocasia portei, (Schott) Engl. 1883
Schizocasia regnieri, L.Linden & Rodigas 1887
non.:
Alocasia portei, Becc. & Engl. 1879

Etymology:

portei = Alocasia portei was named after the French botanist Marius Porte. A botanist from Marseille, he set out in 1834 to explore tropical countries and remained in Brazil until 1859. He then left America for Borneo, Singapore and the Philippines. He was the first to experiment with shipping plants wrapped in peat moss, which allowed him to bring new plants, especially orchids, to Europe. Marius Porte died in 1866 on the island of Luzon from an unknown disease.

Propagation: Meristem
Origin: Philippines
Habitat:

terrestrial in secondary forest at low elevations. Originally discovered in Mindanao, but now widely distributed in the Philippines, and also reported in Indonesia.

Notes:

According to H. Schott in the original description the plant name is based on a leaf which was passed on by Herman Wendland (Berggarten Hannover). A few years later another plant with the same name of Sulawesii was described by Beccari and Engler. Whether both plants are really the same species is doubtful. Alocasia portei can grow very tall, stem lengths of 5m and more are possible.
Alocasia 'Jacklyn' is the name for this cultivar. The name probably comes from the finder, her first name is said to be (was called?) Jacklyn, this super beautiful, colorful and mega attractive species originates from Borneo.
