Name: | Alocasia melo, A.Hay, P.C.Boyce & K.M.Wong 1997 |
Synonyms: | not known |
Etymology: | melo = the bullate and wrinkled leaves resemble the skin of a canteloupe melon |
Propagation: | Meristem |
Origin: | Borneo |
Habitat: | endemic to Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.Rain-forest on ultramafic (vulcanic) rock: in rock crevices and on thin soil along steep banks of fast-flowing streams at altitudes of 120–400 m. |
Notes: | Alocasia melo is rarely offered, yet the leathery, thick, greenish-blue leaves with prominent veins are unusually exciting. Native to the natural paradise of Sabah in Borneo, this Alocasia has some of the most textured leaves known. Because of the rough texture of the leaves, this species is also traded as Alocasia rugosa, but this name is botanically invalid. |
