Piper nigrum (black pepper) is a worldwide cultivated plant, the main areas are in the warm and humid tropics. Originally, this species comes from the pepper coast of India (Malabar Coast). Green pepper is obtained from unripe, early harvested fruits, black pepper is also obtained from unripe, not yet yellow-orange but also green fruits, which have become wrinkled and black by drying. White pepper is only the stone core of fully ripe peppercorns. Originally, pepper was not known as a spice, but as a preservative.
Piper nigrum can form over 3m long tendrils, can also be cultivated well as a hanging basket plant. Although the plant originates from the tropics, it easily adapts to the conditions in a normally heated living room.
