Etymology:

artanthe = reference to an acid contained in the oil of the matico, Piper angustifolium (Artanthe elongata).

Origin: Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela
Habitat:

terrestrial in humid cloud forests in the undergrowth at higher to high humidity at altitudes of 1600 - 3000m above sea level.

Notes:

Piper artanthe grows in sheltered places in the undergrowth of the Andes. Plants under 1m are mostly herbaceous, as soon as they are older they become woody. The leaves are hairless, the strongly corrugated surface is the special attraction of the plant. The corrugation doubles the leaf surface and the plant can make the best use of the available light.
