Product information "Anthurium regale M"
Name: Anthurium regale, Linden 1866
Synonyms:

unknown

Etymology:

regalis = royal, grand, magnificent

Propagation: divisions
Origin: Peru
Habitat:

Anthurium regale was found by Gustave Wallis in Peru on the banks of the Marañón, one of the two great headwaters of the Amazon.

Notes:

The epithet regale (belonging to a king) exists for this species undoubtedly rightly. The velvety leaves with the wonderful drawing need no further description, the foliage speaks for itself. There are numerous, wonderful rarities of this species, it is difficult to decide, the best is to collect them all. The enthusiasm for this species is shown in the original description from Belg. Horticole from 1866 (16:200) translated here:

NEW PLANTS RECENTLY INTRODUCED BY M. J. LINDEN, AT THE ROYAL GARDEN OF ZOOLOGY AND HORTICULTURE IN BRUSSELS.
Anthurium regale, Linden. - Everyone has been able to appreciate the merit of the Anthurium magnificum which we put on the market in the spring of 1865, and which was simultaneously introduced into England under the improper name of A. cordifolium, this specific denomination having belonged for half a century to an old species described by Kunth. We can pay no greater tribute of praise to the species here under discussion than by giving it equal, if not superior, titles to its predecessor. Its leaves, long-stalked, cordate, very acuminate, reach seventy centimeters in length and a proportional width; they pass through various shades before reaching their full development; initially blood-red, they then turn brown, then olive yellow and finally emerald green; the surface is satiny, shimmering, with white and prominent venation. The discovery of this brilliant Aroidée is due to our eminent collector M. G. Wallis, who collected it in the deep and obscure gorges furrowing the oriental slope of the Peruvian Cordillera, towards the banks of the high Maranon. Deliverable after June 1, at fr. 50 "
