Habitat: | Mostly terrestrial in moist forests at elevations of 350-2100m. |
Notes: | On July 6, 1801, Humboldt and Bonpland arrived in Bogota, Colombia. There they met José Mutis, probably the most important botanist in South America. Mutis' extensive botanical collection and magnificent library, as well as his botanical books and sketches (and drawings), reinforced Humboldt's urge to research plants more intensively on this trip. As a direct result of this acquaintance, Humboldt and Bonpland penetrated deep into the Andes, which until then had hardly been explored. |
